Pride In Business: What first inspired you to be an artist?

Scott Clark: I wasn’t very good at life as a kid and found solace and wonder on pieces of paper, where I could let my imagination and humour fly.

PIB: Who inspires you as an artist?

SC: This may sound strange, but boredom is my biggest muse. And the fact that when I create Art, it is always an adventure. As well, I am very competitive, so when I see other Artist get projects, I strive to do the same.

PIB: What themes do you usually pursue in your works?

SC: Anything goes, but right now, I am exploring faces and figure drawing.

PIB: Where are you from, and how does that affect your work?

SC: I am born and raised in northeast Calgary. Being an outsider has given me the drive and grit to become an established professional Artist

PIB: How does your art showcase your identity? What medium or technique best represents you?

SC: The art I make is always a reflection of me, as well as society. At the moment my preferred mediums are acrylic paint, water colour, and song-writing.

PIB: What motivates you to be creative, what is your creative process?

SC: Over the years, I have built up a discipline of making art. I trust the process. Sometimes I use stream-of-consciousness, sometimes I design a piece using my experience and intuition. I have found that making art is my trusted companion – always there to receive me.

PIB: How has your art evolved since your first began?

SC: My art is always continuously changing and evolving. Because I get bored easily and like a challenge, you will notice that every year, my art has a new aesthetic, but with the same motifs and symbolism.

PIB: What would be your biggest achievement as an artist so far?

SC: I would say that the current project I’m working on is my biggest achievement. I am painting a legacy mural for the 2023 Alberta Summer Games.

PIB: What would you say to new artists trying to work in this industry? What advice would you give them?

SC: Trust your instincts, continue to experiment, outwit the naysayers, and persevere.
