How to Use Music for Stress Relief

By Jarred Nicklen

1) First thing in the morning

Why not make it your alarm tone?

What better way to set your day right than to put on a chill playlist the moment you wake up. Keep it playing while you have your shower, eat your breakfast and brush your teeth. A slower tempo in music can help relax your muscles, ease your mind and release stress. This just might be what you need to get in the right mindset for whatever you have planned (or not planned) for your day.

2) While at work

De-stress and keep a positive headspace

Some relaxing music might be what you need to help keep you calm, positive, and focused while taking on the challenges of your workday. Beat stress to the punch. Stay in a good headspace so there is nothing your boss can throw at you to derail your day.

3)While you Study

Stay focused and Improve your mood

Got a big exam coming up? Throw on some chill music to help soothe and relax you. This type of background music could help improve your focus on a task by providing motivation and improving your mood. Chill music often lacks intense lyrics, which can be distracting when you are trying to absorb new or complicated material. Now let's go get that "A".

4) During meditation or yoga

keep balanced and Centre your energy

Meditation can help reduce negative emotions and helps increase imagination and creativity. Why not play some slow chill music to get you in the mood, ease that muscle tension and slow down your breathing? This could help you keep balanced, centre your energy, and take you to that perfect zen. Inhale...Exhale...Breathe.

5) Before you go to bed or while you sleep

relax, minimize anxiety, and improve the quality of your sleep

We’re busy, and a good night’s sleep is immensely important in giving yourself the best chance at a positive and productive day. Listening to some gentle music before bed can actually improve the quality of your sleep. By helping calm your mind, it can help you sleep better, stay asleep for longer, and you may spend less time lying awake. It could help you drown out those voices reminding you of all the things you need to do the next day. For those of you that have difficulty sleeping, pairing chill music with light meditation or breathing exercises can go a long way to minimizing the anxiety and frustration that can cause insomnia.
